The traditional roles of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurses and advanced practice registered nurse are different between the ambulatory and inpatient care settings. Yet, the United States has historically had difficulty differentiating the identity of the ambulatory nurse. With a heavy focus on scope of practice and quality improvement work, this presentation discusses the optimal use of all three nursing roles in a busy ambulatory setting to not only survive difficult staffing and pandemic challenges, but persevere and pursue growth as a department and within the nursing profession.
